Unit on Revolutionary War

Unit Overview

Overview

This Unit will cover the Revolutionary War from beginning to end. Students will learn the causes leading up to the War, the War itself, as well as the repercussions resulting from the War. We will be using a variety of technology to help students understand the concepts of the Unit.

Student Audience

The subject of this unit will be the Revolutionary War, Social Studies and the grade level will be 5th.

Time-frame

The time frame for this Unit is 3 weeks (15 days), with 2 hours a day devoted to the Unit.

Rationale

The reason we are studying this unit is to help students understand America’s Independence. I want to make sure students have a firm grasp on how and why America gained independence and understand it took a War for this to happen. Along with this the unit will lay and foundation of understanding in economics and social change.

Unit Objectives

Students will be able to understand what it took for America to become independent from British rule. By the end of the Unit students should know the major figures involved in America’s independence and also the major reason behind the Revolutionary War.

Unit Standards

1. Students understand the chronological organization of
history and know how to organize events and people into
major eras to identify and explain historical relationships.

2. Students know how to use the processes and resources of
historical inquiry*.

3. Students understand that societies* are diverse* and have
changed over time.

4. Students understand how science, technology, and economic
activity have developed, changed, and affected societies
throughout history.

5. Students understand political institutions and theories that
have developed and changed over time.

6. Students know that religious and philosophical ideas have
been powerful forces throughout history.

Variations or Adaptations

If I were to do this Unit for a Special Education class I would want to make sure I did as much interaction in the learning process as possible. I would try to stay away from lecturing constantly, and rather would make sure the students were constantly engaged in the learning process. By engagement I mean much more role playing, team activities, and group discussions. I don’t know really anything about teaching Special needs children, but I can presume attention span is a huge factor when designing a lesson plan for any unit of study. My main concern would be to not allow myself to lose the students. I would want to plan the Unit around making sure the students are learning through many various technologies and mediums.

If I were teaching this Unit to an ESL classroom I would want to structure the lessons around reading, writing, and speaking. I would try to use more technology blogs, group discussions, and individual writings. Students would do a lot of work writing stories about what they have learned to date on the Revolutionary war, and then present these stories orally to the class. Again, I do not have any experience or knowledge teaching ESL students, so I may be off in my assumptions in putting a lesson plan together.
